Celebrating Women for the Real World

Ahhh, November

I have to tell ya, I love Thanksgiving. I love the month of November. I love it as much as, if maybe not a little more than Christmas. When I look back, the most enjoyable family gatherings were on Thanksgiving. And then there is the food. I mean, who doesn’t remember waking to the smell of turkey already cooking. Oh, and the pies. I think I just gained 5 lbs. thinking about it.

Unfortunately, I never got to enjoy a family Thanksgiving dinner as “an adult”. I left home when I was 18 soon after graduating. I never got to “go home” for Thanksgiving as my mother died on November 4th. I was planning to come home. I had my plane ticket to come home. But, that didn’t happen. Fortunately, my husband’s family has taken me in and treated me as their own. It’s amazing to see the similarities between his family, Texas born, Texas bread; and my family, Yankee born, Yankee, well, I’m not going to finish that sentence.

The best part of all though must be making those silly hand turkeys. I love them. Love, love, love them. I don’t care if they are just traced and colored or more elaborate with glitter and googly eyes; I love them. To this day, my kids still make me one. To this day, I still hang them on my fridge until Christmas decor comes out.

Any favorite Thanksgiving memories for y’all?

Our Thanksgiving has come and gone for another year (ours is in October here in Canada). Ours this year was lovely … we went to Gord’s parents’ place for the weekend. His mom made a big turkey dinner. Gord’s sister and her family were there too. It was fun.

Our Thanksgivings growing up weren’t fun. Our turkey was dry (my mother overcooked it) and my mother was usually drunk.

Thanksgivings are much better now πŸ™‚

We used to go to my mom’s mothers house for lunch and then my dad’s parents house for dinner – talk about some serious eating! πŸ˜›

I love Thanksgiving too! Every 7 years my birthday falls on it. Which is cool, except for when I turned 21… πŸ˜›

I love to put olives on my fingers and eat them at Thanksgiving! That is a memory I have! Also, each year my Mom had me make the placecards. The “California Yankee” family I married into doesn’t even know what placecards are! LOL

I’m sorry you lost your mother so soon.

I think I gained 10lbs. reading this post. My mom cooked every year. Great memories. She is doing it again this year but all the kids bring the side dishes.

I have to start some kinda tradtion. We did “What are we thankful for” one year and by gosh; I’m making everyone do it again this year.

    Love the turkey hands idea.

Oh! Thanksgiving is just busy for me. I think I gain about 20 pounds in one 24 hour period. First there’s the lunch with the family, then my friend has started a tradition of dinner on Thanksgiving…then sometimes I’ll meander over to Carrie’s sister’s house to pick the leftovers. I don’t eat for about a day after.
